What are Superfoods?

Superfoods are foods that are determined to have a high nutritional value.  Generally they are thought to bestow a specific health benefit when we eat them.

Sometimes I think too much about what I shouldn’t eat and not enough about what I should eat.  Recently I realized that I need to put more focus on what I am putting in my body, not for how I will look, but for how I am really caring for myself for the long term.

Superfoods and Nutrition

Traditional medicine is excellent for acute health needs- such as car accidents, delivering babies, surgeries, etc.  But when it comes to disease prevention, and disease treatment for that matter, traditional medicine tends to fail spectacularly.  The number one best thing we can do to protect ourselves against cancer, heart disease, diabetes, liver disease, kidney failure, and so forth- the number one weapon we have against disease is nutrition.  I can’t emphasize enough how important nutrition is in life.  Nature’s intention with humans was for us to eat fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, whole fresh sprouted grains.  Every part of our bodies, from our teeth to our digestive system, is designed to eat this way.

So, what do we do?  We fill ourselves with pesticides, chemicals, additives, lard, animal fats, sodium, and all the other toxic garbage that comes in processed food.  I do it too.  I love Dominos pizza.  I could eat In-N-Out every day.  Ice cream, brownies, cheesecake… but you know what?  Those foods are genuinely horrible for my body.

I want to conduct an experiment.  I want to eat as much “slow” food as possible.  I want to eat as close to nature as I can.  I am not ready to eat a completely vegan raw organic diet.  But I will do my best to incorporate as many of these foods as possible in my diet in the upcoming weeks.  I know that it definitely will not hurt, and may very well provide some amazing nourishment to my body.

To start off, I have compiled a list of foods that I will purposely eat more of.  My goal is to incorporate at least three of these foods into every meal.  With the focus on eating more of what’s good rather than less of what’s bad, I won’t feel deprived, and will be able to congratulate myself three times a day for taking positive steps toward my goal!

My favorite is Green Juice: Spinach, Apple, Celery, Kale, Cucumber, Lime, Parsley, Ginger.  Juice all ingredients together, drink & detoxify your body!  What’s yours?
